Jin All packed. So this really is my last day here.
An afternoon before moving to another department.
Ara You're still sorting things?
One worn binder remained on the empty desk.
Jin This page keeps falling out.
He repaired its torn corner.
Ara It won't be your job tomorrow.
He paused for a moment.
Jin This thing saved me when I first got here.
Someone had made the old dividers inside.
Jin remembers I don't even know which file is the latest.
His first day at this desk.
Former colleague I was lost too. Start with this.
A colleague handed him a binder prepared in advance.
Jin They moved departments soon after that.
The person had gone. Their help had stayed.
Jin Now it's my turn to get things ready.
He added one missing line to the instructions.
Ara Then I'll add some dividers.
One person's effort became a shared task.
New colleague Now I can see where to begin. Thank you.
The unfamiliar desk felt a little less daunting.
Story After Jin left, a small kindness remained on the desk.
It was for someone he had not met yet.
A thought from the Talmud As those before me planted for me, I plant for those who will come after.
